Chute Gerdeman is proud to announce its Krispy Kreme Times Square Flagship has won a coveted Global Design Award from Shop!, the global trade association dedicated to enhancing retail environments and experiences. The Shop! Awards are the premier awards program in the retail industry, honoring the best of the best in the retail design industry.

The judges cited Chute Gerdeman for creating a superb combination of the elements critical to success at retail: excellence in design, originality in use of space and materials, and quality of concept execution.

Where It All Began

Ready to launch the brand in a big way in the Big Apple, Krispy Kreme sought out a partner to create a visually enticing flagship experience worthy of their iconic treats. Leaving a lasting impression was a major priority, and the goal was to create a one-of-a-kind experience to serve as a prototype for the future and stretch what was possible for the Krispy Kreme store presence. This flagship not only needed to satisfy tourists but also appeal to locals who live fast 24/7.

While the environment is fun and full of energy, the design required efficiency to keep tourists engaged but stay on pace with the NYC lifestyle. Wide awake in the city that never sleeps, this Krispy Kreme experience needed to have an always-open option making it enjoyable (and the doughnuts consumable) every hour of the day and night.

Multiple ordering methods were integrated, giving patrons the option to easily order in-store, quickly place an order via the new walk-up window, or order ahead via the brand’s mobile app.

Inspired by a doughnut factory, the space builds on the heritage of the brand story but fit for Times Square. Visibility into the doughnut-making process created a focal point of the experience, where guests can watch as doughnuts are made in real-time, at a record rate of nearly 4,800 an hour.

The store features choreographed color-changing LED lights and digital conveyor belts, giving the sense of energy and action to play on the theatrical factory feel. For those looking to take home more than just some sweets, branded, flexible fixtures were designed and developed to display the expanded retail assortment, including exclusive NYC merchandise.
