A Story of Generational Community Hospitality

Tiltons Automotive Service, a family owned business in Columbus, Ohio, set out to construct a new building delivering on the long-standing legacy of service, trust, and community that they’ve built over generations.

With a commitment to customer experience, Andy and Chris Tilton wanted a building that went beyond auto repair. Focusing instead on team well-being, and community connection. As a small business, their vision needed to be executed within a cost-efficient budget while still delivering thoughtful design that could support their future growth. Their goals included creating a more transparent and welcoming environment, improving guest flow, and enhancing both the customer and employee experience through design innovation.

Tiltons Gets a Lift

The new Tiltons Automotive Service building was strategically designed and built around a hospitality centered experience, The L shaped building intuitively guides guests through the service process, with an easy to navigate customer drop off at the rear, leading to a warm and friendly concierge moment and customer lounge. Ultimately the experiences ends in a curated pickup moment front under a branded porte cochère.

In the auto industry, transparency is key. Visibility into the service bays builds trust with customers, while simplicity in construction materials like exposed trusses add warmth and honesty to the environment.

The design team utilized passive solar techniques of placing clerestory windows and large floor to ceiling storefronts to flood the spaces with natural light both for customers and service areas. Tilton technician needs were prioritized with dedicated locker and lounge zones, as well as spacious work bays. Every touchpoint, inside and out, was designed to reflect Tilton’s legacy of trusted service and care and turn an automotive service shop into a true reflection of community commitment.
