Philadelphia-based Anthropologie is all abuzz for Earth Day with a subject dear to our hearts: the plight of the honey bee and its relation to sustainable agriculture. Culture-current Anthropologie filled its windows this week with imaginative representations of hives, honeycombs, and habitats, done with the retailer’s signature use of unexpected materials.

This news resonated with one of our colleagues who had learned quite a bit about bees at a Sonoma Land Trust dinner last summer. The eye-opening presentation, “Will there be Honey Bees at Oak Hill Farm in the year 2035?” was presented by Serge Labesque, who maintains bee colonies in Sonoma County, California, including one at Oak Hill Farm.

Bees are in trouble (and that’s bad news for us). Our energetic pollinators and honey makers have declined in numbers at an alarming rate. From a high in 1948 of 6 million colonies, the number today hovers around 1.5 million. Why should we care? [More]
