Blast from the Past in Materials

As Chute Gerdeman Retail’s Material & Trend Specialist, Katie Clements is involved in all retail projects providing design support as a materials and color expert. She utilizes her vast knowledge and extensive library to present clients with well-considered selections for fabric, carpet, tile, wallcovering, lighting, furniture, and any other special project features.

Read on as Katie takes us on a visual “blast from the past,” with these retro-inspired materials:

Flocked Wallcovering

New flocked wallcovering is modernized with shimmer and metallic highlights to provide dimension; all that glam and it still meets a Class A fire rating!

Updated Linoleum

No more 1960’s kitchen floors! Armstrong’s new Linoleum Collection provides updated colors and textures to bring this timeless material into the 21st century. Even after 100 years, Linoleum is still a sustainable product—making it even more desirable today.

The New Avocado

Green has always been a popular color with interiors, changing with the times from avocado, to chartreuse, to grass green. Green represents natural elements, sustainability, and wealth. The color of 2010 determined by the ColourFutures team, is Jade—a soothing and calming green meant to convey hope in an otherwise uncertain time.

Retro Drapery

Knoll’s Mira sheer drapery has a dramatic repetition of shapes and bold colors. This sheer was originally designed by American artist and industrial designer Ross Littell in 1958, but was re-colored a few years ago as an update to this classic pattern. Check out the photo from 1958 of the first Mira installation.

Sew Retro

Interface Flor has introduced a new line of carpet tiles all inspired by great moments in fashion over the years. My favorite is called “Sew Retro,” a tribute to vivid blocks of colors found on clothing in the 70s and 80s. “Sew Retro” but so modern at the same time.
